Postpartum Care for Mom

Let’s talk about something you probably won’t get advice about from many people before you have the baby: caring for your vaginal and perineum areas in the days and weeks after childbirth.

During that time, your body can go through a number of changes that you’ve likely never before experienced. Your vaginal area may be swollen and your perineum will be very sore. You may see varicose veins appear that weren’t there before childbirth. You will also experience bleeding similar to a heavy period for one to three days after their baby is born.  This bleeding continues for several weeks, though it’s not typically as heavy after the first few days.

Now, I don’t tell you all of this to make you nervous. Because the good news is that you can prepare for these changes ahead of time with homemade, natural remedies and simple items you can pick up from the drug store. And the best news is that these changes mean you have a new baby to share life with!

Wondering what you should have on-hand? Here are some of my top suggestions as a postpartum doula:

-Sanitary pads (not tampons until about 6 weeks postpartum)

-Motrin or Ibuprofen for pain relief

-Single use disposable panties

-Sitz bath spray

Recipe for Witch Hazel Pads*

(The bark and leaves of Witch Hazel are cleansing and have astringent qualities)

 What You’ll Need:

Overnight pads

Witch Hazel

Wax paper

A large Tupperware container

 Directions:

1.     Dampen overnight pad with Witch Hazel liquid

2.     Place in Tupperware container

3.     Place wax paper over the pad.

4.     Repeat the process and continue layering wax paper and pads until you have a desired number

5.     Place in freezer until needed

*You can also add a small amount of witch hazel to your peri bottle with warm water while using the bathroom to help decrease burning during urination.

I really wish I would have known ahead of time what type of discomfort to expect.  All the reading and classes can’t quite prepare exactly what to plan for,  every body is different.  I will say though that sits baths and ticks pads with witchazel were lifesavers.  The only other thing that brought me some pain relief was breastfeeding.  It may sound funny,  but it’s true.  The hormones produced during breastfeeding are natural endorphins and help with the discomfort.  Not to mention all the wonderful benefits to your baby!
