Common Concerns During Pregnancy

It seems as if there are alerts in the news every day about what pregnant women should avoid in order to protect their health and the health of their unborn baby. Determining what is safe and what isn’t can be confusing and upsetting. How do you know what information to trust?

DayOne Recommends:

  • Your OB or midwife knows you best and should be your first source of information about your pregnancy, so maximize your monthly appointments to your health-care provider by making a list of important questions or confusing information beforehand.
  • Access only reputable websites to avoid unnecessary anxiety or inaccurate advice. DayOne’s favorite websites for information on pregnancy health and concerns are listed on the left side of this page.

Common Pregnancy Discomforts

It’s tough to feel excited about your pregnancy while experiencing morning sickness, fatigue, heartburn, lower backache, swollen ankles and insomnia! Luckily, there are many strategies for helping with these and other discomforts.  One of DayOne’s favorite books is Dr. Alan Greene’s Raising Baby Green, The Earth Friendly Guide to Pregnancy, Childbirth and Baby Care.

Raising Baby Green can be found in the DayOne Lending Library or for sale.

In addition to the tips and tricks mentioned in Raising Baby Green, DayOne has found that many women receive relief from common discomforts using these unique and safe products:

For Morning Sickness:
Preggie Pops
Morning Sickness Magic

For Lower Backache, Hip and Pelvic Pain, many health care providers recommend Maternity Support Belts. They reduce lower back pain, support the uterus, and help you maintain proper posture, all of which allows you to continue an active lifestyle. They are adjustable to accommodate size changes during pregnancy, are comfortable for everyday use, and are unnoticeable under clothing. Come into a DayOne Center and let our trained staff fit you with a comfortable maternity support belt. More information: Prenatal Cradle and Gabrialla Maternity Support Belts

Varicose Veins
During the later months of pregnancy (third trimester), the weight of the baby and the uterus may impede the return of blood through the veins of your legs. Gradient compression stockings are recommended by many health-care providers to help reduce blood congestion and support the veins of your legs. Compression support hose helps manage the increased blood volume and the relaxed vein walls that occur in pregnancy, reducing the amount of swelling and the severity of varicose veins.  More information: Jobst Compression Support Hose

Talk with your obstetrician or OB nurse about the amount of compression and the stocking style best suited for you. DayOne’s staff is trained to fit you for the best results.
